The Bombay Society of Oral
Implantologists (B.S.O.I.) was founded in 1989 by 10
Dentists. As many dentists from outside Bombay were joining
as members, the Committee members decided to convert the
B.S.O.I. to a National Body. Hence, in 1993, the name was
changed to "Indian Society of Oral Implantologists " (I.S.O.I.).
In 1995, I.S.O.I. obtained affiliation to the International
Congress of Oral Implantologists, USA.
The Founder President was Dr. F. D. Mirza while the
successive Presidents were Dr. A. P. Chitre, Dr. H. D.
Adhiya, Dr. S. S. Khambay, Dr. M. P. Sabuwalla, Dr. Ajit
Shetty, Dr.Vivek Shanbhag, Dr. Selwyn Almeida & Dr. Glenn
Mascarenhas. Currently the Society is headed by President,
Dr. Ratish Chandra.
The aims and objectives of the Indian Society of Oral
Implantologists are to advance the science and art of Oral
Implantology in all its phases, to foster research and
education, to improve dental health and comfort of the
public; to promote a high standard of ethics; to generally
do all such acts consistent with promoting the exchange of
current and innovative procedures, as well as basic and
clinical research in all areas of Oral Implantology; to
honour those who have made significant contributions to the
science and art of Oral Implantology and to promote and
safeguard the interest of the Society.
The Membership of the Society is open to Indian and Overseas
Dentists with qualifications from a recognized University,
Dental Technicians, Dental Auxiliaries, Dental/Implant
manufacturers and dealers, Physicians, Surgeons and Research
Personnel. Student Membership is available to Undergraduate
and Post-graduate Dental students, Residents, Dental
Mechanics and Dental Auxiliary students.
The Society is governed by an Executive Council, which is
elected by members every 2 years at the Annual General
Meeting. The Executive Council functions strictly according
to the powers and restrictions set forth in the Constitution
of the Society.
In its 20 years of existence the ISOI has organized 15
National Conferences which have been addressed by a galaxy
of speakers from India and Overseas. A series of Implant
Education Programmes both didactic and hands on have enabled
inumerable dentists to train and adopt Implantology in
practice. Numerous regional and local scientific meetings
and educational programs have been and continue to be
conducted to educate the profession as well as public on
Oral Implantology. The Society has also drafted the academic
curriculum in Oral Implantology for Graduate and Post
Graduate students on request by the Dental Council of India.
The ISOI has a peer review and recognition programme of
awarding Fellowship and Diplomateship to its active members
on scrutiny and review of their work and accomplishments. To
date the ISOI has conferred Diplomateship on 10 members and
Fellowship on 39 members.
From humble beginnings, the ISOI over the years, has grown
from strength to strength and is currently the only National
body in Oral Implantology in India. Its membership today
stands at almost 850 spread over the entire nation.
The ISOI was privileged to be given the honour of hosting
the 11th Congress of the ICOI Asia Pacific Section in Mumbai
- the first of such an event in India, along with the 14th
National Conference of the ISOI which was held from 29th
November to 2nd Dec 2007. This was a landmark Congress in
the history of the ISOI and had 26 Main Podium speakers as
well as 54 second podium speakers and was held at the
National Centre for the Performing Arts at Mumbai.
The 16th National Conference of the ISOI will be held in
Chandigarh from 12th to 14th December 2009.
